About Clifton Park, New York
Clifton Park, New York (population, close to 60,000) is located in Saratoga County and is part of a larger Albany metropolitan area. Clifton Park contains several small communities including Ballston Lake, Elnora, Flagler Corners, Grooms Corners, Rexford, Round Lake and Vischer Ferry; almost all of these hamlets are located along Route 146. A small-town charm creates a sense of community within the town that is appealing to those who choose to live there. The town has a strong focus on the environment and is home to several parks, including CDP Park and Clifton Park Nature Preserve. The latter offers a variety of hiking trails as well as an observation tower.
The first settlers in what is now Clifton Park, New York were established in the 17th century. The town or area was named in 1707 by Nanning Harmansen, who sent letters to Lord Cornbury requesting letters of Patent for Land he bought from the Indigenous Americans. In those letters, he stated that he wanted the patent to be known by “Your name of Cliftons Park”, and the patent was named the Clifton Park Patent. The Iroquois name for the Clifton Park Patent was Shenendehowa (meaning “Great Plains”) which is where the school district derives its name.
